Meet the Amazing short-legged Munchkins...
Munchkins are probably the most controversial breed ever! I was horrified when I first learnt about them and gradually changed my mind
as I got more informed. The first short legged cats were discovered during WWI in the UK but didnt survive the war. The next ones flourished in Russia in the seventies but no one knows
what happened to them. And about 25 years ago they surfaced in the USA. South Africa's first three Munchkins arrived about five years ago - imported by Johan Lamprecht and myself.
All three were bred by Diana Scollard - my girl, Animaldocs Low and Behold - shortly after (forgive the pun) renamed Stompie - pictured left. Within two days of her arrival, Stompie made her way to the top of my roof,
a feat no other cat managed - with those short little legs! These cats can outrun any other cat, have superb cornering abilities and can jump very well. They also seem to have an amazing streak of trying to prove themselves all the time.
All these factors, plus the uniqueness have made them very popular here in SA.
Veertjie, (pictured on the left) is one of Stompie's daughters and has produced a gorgeous pointed Munchkin. Twiggle (on the right), for Theresa,
who has several gorgeous Munchkins, and one of them, Collette (bred by Johan) was the first Munchkin to partake in a Cat of the Year
competion in 2001. More pics of her cats will follow soon.
This little man is Kitkat, bred by Johan Lamprecht. He is my Munchkin stud and has produced gorgeous babies with
the girls. This pic was taken when he himself was a baby.
KittKatt's most photographed son, Toktokkie. His owner, Theresa, reckons this is the best way to keep him content as he demands constant attention. That's what happens when a boy is spoilt rotten - but being spoilt silly is the only way to look after a kitten properly anyway.
The Skookum is even more controversial but seem to continue to intrigue everyone. This is the result of a mating
between a Munchkin and a LaPerm. The result is a gorgeous little creature with curly hair and short little legs - as one of my friends call them - A Short and Curly! This curious little girl
is named Karnaki Grote Griet! (which is an exclamation in Afrikaans, meaning 'Good Grief!')
